In light of the recent announcement by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office that paper reminders will no longer be sent to drivers to renew their vehicle registration, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is encouraging residents to enroll in an email reminder system to avoid fines and renew their license.

“Without receiving a paper reminder in the mail, it can be easy to forget the exact time to renew a license,” said Moylan. “I encourage everyone to sign up for an email reminder to make sure they avoid potential fines.”

The decision to suspend the paper reminder system was announced in response to Governor Rauner’s continued unwillingness to work with state legislators in creating a new state budget. The Secretary of State’s office estimates that eliminating the paper reminder program will save the agency $450,000 each month. The office will continue to mail out other items such as the stickers themselves, as well as titles and licenses plates.

Residents can sign up to receive their vehicle registration reminder online at www.ilsos.gov/greenmail/ using the registration ID and personal identification number on their current registration card. Residents can also call the Secretary of State’s Public Inquiry Division at 1-800-252-8980 with questions or help with the registration process.

“The governor continues to play political games with the budget making process, and the hard working taxpayers end up paying the price with reduced services,” said Moylan. “I encourage the governor to return to the table so we can work on a budget and end these arbitrary cutbacks in services.”
