Moylan, Commissioner Cabonargi to Host Board of Review Property Tax Appeal Seminar

10/17/2017

DES PLAINES, Ill. – Continuing his efforts to ease the property tax burden on local residents, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, and state senator Laura Murphy, D-Elk Grove Village will be hosting Cook County board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi for a Property Tax Appeal Seminar on October 23rd, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, located at 1501 Ellinwood Avenue in Des Plaines.

“It’s time for politicians to work on putting money back in the pockets of homeowners who have been struggling to make ends meet due to high property taxes,” Moylan said. “Seminars like this are a great first step towards returning some hard-earned money to taxpayers.”

At the meeting, Board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi will inform the attendees on how to properly fill out an appeal form and discuss with the audience about how the appeals process works. The Cook County Board of Review is an agency independent of the Cook County Assessor’s office and offers residents another option to file an appeal on their property taxes. After each township’s reassessment is complete, the Board of Review opens an appeal window to allow property owners to appeal the assessment set by the Cook County Assessor.

The period to file an appeal in Cook County is scheduled on a rotating basis by township. Currently, the Cook County Board of Review is accepting appeals from Elk Grove and Maine Township through October 24, 2017.

“Property taxes are crushing the middle class families in our community,” Moylan said. “Many of the residents I have talked to believe property taxes are becoming unaffordable, that is why I will continue to advocate for a property tax cut while down in Springfield.”
